Produced by Mibelle's in-house PhytoCellTec culture technology, PhytoCellTec Md Nu is a powdered biomass from cultured callus cells derived from a Swiss apple variety, Uttwiler Spätlauber.

What makes this apple variety different is its longevity characteristics - unlike other apple varieties the skin of the Uttwiler Spätlauber does not shrivel.

This led researchers to hypothesise this apple may have anti-aging factors that can be utilised in supplements.

The Swiss firm says its own cellular studies suggest a strong positive effect on skin density and elasticity.

Regarding the mode of action, the firm hypothesises: "PhytoCellTec Md Nu plant cells are rich in epigenetic factors protecting skin cells from aging. They also provide the skin with important metabolites, supporting the longevity of the skin stem cells and improve their viability and healthiness."

However, today there are only few Uttwiler Spätlauber trees left. In fact, this variety is on the list of endangered plants by the Swiss National Action Plan for the Conservation of Plant Genetic Resources in Food and Agriculture (NAP-PGREL).

Mibelle Biochemistry has therefore used its PhytoCellTec technology to allow the production of larger quantities of high-quality biomass from a very small piece of apple.

In the EFSA approval document, it states: "The cells have been sourced from the callus grown on a piece of apple placed on a solid medium under sterile conditions. The de-differentiated apple cells are then cultivated in liquid medium.

"The medium contains sucrose, vitamins, minerals, trace elements and the two synthetic plant hormone analogues, benzylaminopurine (< 0.1 mg/kg) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (< 0.25 mg/kg). These plant hormones are regulated under the EU pesticide legislation and their residue levels in the NF are in compliance with the EU maximum residue levels.

"The main components of the NF are carbohydrates (including sugars and non-digestible carbohydrates), ash, proteins and smaller amounts of fatty acids and organic acids."

"The Panel considers that a provided subchronic toxicity study was not needed to establish the safety of this NF, when taking into account the source of the NF, i.e. apples, the production process, the low intended use level and the composition of the NF, despite the noted differences to apple. The Panel concludes that the NF, an apple fruit cell culture biomass, is safe under the proposed conditions of use."

The ingredient will be made available to the European market soon.

Speaking to CosmeticsDesign-Asia recently, Mibelle's founder and managing director Fred Zülli expressed his growing interest in the topic of healthspan and lifespan, and how it is fuelling the company’s research into the mechanisms of ageing.

“Anti-ageing is our main focus, and we want to find new activities. We are collaborating with the Federal Institute of Technology in Switzerland, where there is a department studying ageing mechanisms in general.”

With countries such as Japan and Singapore grappling with the burdens of ageing populations, the topic of healthy ageing is driving the development of products that can help us thrive and flourish even as we age.

“I think its not only important that we can extend the lifespan but also the healthspan. We can adopt the findings into cosmetics so we can not only live longer and help the skin become healthier,” said Zülli.

The beauty-from-within specialist also has its sights set on sports nutrition with its recently launched haskap berry powder marketed as an endurance and performance booster.

“EnduBerry Nu allows recreational runners to significantly improve their endurance level within seven days of consumption, leading to better performance,” Dr. Torsten Grothe, head of food and health at Mibelle, told NutraIngredients-USA when the product was launched in January 2023.

The Enduberry Nu plant-powder extract is sourced from the haskap berry, a member of the honeysuckle family native to the harsher climes of the Northern Hemisphere. Named by the indigenous Ainu people of Northern Japan (haskap translates to “the berry of longevity”), it is a lesser known but no less powerful superberry rich in anthocyanins and polyphenols.

These phytochemicals, Grothe said, provide synergistic effects that reduce free radicals and inflammation, protecting mitochondria from oxidative stress that leads to muscle fatigue and reduced physical performance. In addition, these compounds are known to help vascular function to increase blood flow, oxygen delivery and exercise efficiency.
